Rush #9 She's Gotta Have It

For this rush topic I chose to focus on the comedic principles of Unification in relation to my anchor in "She's Gotta Have It." I chose Nola's hair because it at first captured my interest, I liked the style and through it was different. I feel like it also symbolizes the era and women being able to express themselves like they hadn't been able to before. It ties in with her choice to not pick one man and to keep her personal freedom by choosing a haircut that is short and strong. I can't seem to find a way to connect my anchor ( Nola's hair) to Unification but I think a good scene to chose is when the audience is introduced to Greer Childs, (one of her 3 boyfriends) who thinks he is " so great" but really, little does he know Nola won't be choosing him even though he thinks they are great together and that he a a great catch. It slightly brings unification into play that he is unaware of his foolishness that he isn't everything she wants.

  1. I think Nola's hair makes a nice choice. The key to understanding this element as an instance of unification would be to engage some of the meanings associated with the conceptual domain in question. The first move is to simply consider the way the word/image in question recurs in the film: Aside from Nora's choice of hairstyle, there's her grooming of Mars' scalp and Greer's grooming of his own hair. The third boyfriend's absence from this particular association might shed light on his particular status (as the one who comes closest to violent behavior and the one whose in the end "selected"). These specific scenes (Nola's grooming of Mars' scalp, for instance) offer insights into the characters' dynamic on the basis of the other scenes their linked with by virtue of "hair" (and related signifiers). In other words, part of Nola's essence (and the nature of her relationship with the three men, her female friends, etc.) can be glimpsed in the passage between these recurrent iterations of your anchor.
